Infinity Ward Breaks Silence on MW4 Matchmaking
Infinity Ward has finally addressed Modern Warfare 4's controversial matchmaking system, revealing how player experience shapes its decisions. But will anything actually change?

Infinity Ward has addressed one of the biggest controversies surrounding Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 Multiplayer, explaining that its matchmaking decisions are guided by player experience and data rather than a single definition of the perfect lobby.
Speaking to IGN, Multiplayer creative director Joe Cecot acknowledged the difficulty of satisfying every player through matchmaking.
"Our end goal is that every match is a good match," Cecot explained.
The statement comes as Modern Warfare 4 launches without clearly labelled Open Matchmaking playlists, reviving a debate that has followed Call of Duty for years.
Infinity Ward is measuring how matchmaking affects different players
Cecot explained that Infinity Ward examines gameplay data to identify when matchmaking negatively affects particular groups of players.
This distinction matters because matchmaking quality cannot necessarily be measured by how closely matched two teams are.
A system designed to produce competitive games may benefit players who prefer balanced encounters, while those seeking a wider variety of opponents may find the same experience repetitive or exhausting.
Connection quality, queue times, team composition and differences in player skill can all influence how enjoyable a match feels. However, Cecot did not disclose the exact weighting of these factors in Modern Warfare 4.
His comments also provide no confirmation of an upcoming matchmaking adjustment.
Why Modern Warfare 4's matchmaking remains controversial
Black Ops 7 introduced Open Matchmaking playlists that placed less emphasis on skill when assembling lobbies, giving players an alternative to more restrictive matchmaking.
That distinction became particularly important for players who wanted casual Multiplayer sessions without consistently facing opponents of similar ability.
