The result is a progression system in which gathering the right materials can be more important than simply finding another weapon.
Operators now have individual progression and permanent traits
Modern Warfare 4 also expands DMZ's Active Duty system.
Players begin with two Active Duty Operator slots, while Vault Edition owners receive three. Additional capacity becomes available through progression.
Although Operators share resources, cash, and Stash contents, each character maintains individual equipment and progression.
Every Operator has access to three Trait Trees:
- Warfighter: Combat-focused abilities covering survivability, equipment, and offensive advantages.
- Scout: Abilities associated with reconnaissance, looting, intelligence, and resource acquisition.
- Survivalist: Abilities designed around healing, recovery, and remaining operational under difficult conditions.
Across these trees, 66 Traits are available, although an individual Operator can earn a maximum of 18 Trait Points.
Progression is linked to the Operator's dog tag, which advances through Steel, Bronze, Silver, Gold, Damascus, and Onyx ranks.
There is also an important consequence to failure.
When an Operator is eliminated, they become Missing in Action and cannot deploy again until recovered. Recovery requires DMZ Cash, with the cost increasing according to that Operator's accumulated Trait Points.
Recovered Operators retain their Traits but return without their lost equipment.
Players can eventually Prestige an Operator after reaching 18 Trait Points and satisfying additional equipment and cash requirements. Prestiging resets ordinary Traits in exchange for a permanent Prestige Trait, with up to three available per Operator.
This makes it reasonable to maintain Operators for different purposes, potentially reserving a highly developed character for important missions while using another for riskier resource runs.
DMZ has its own 70-level progression system
Beyond individual Operators, DMZ introduces a separate progression track extending to Level 70.
This progression is independent of Modern Warfare 4's standard Level 1–55 system, although XP earned in DMZ also contributes to overall player progression.
Multiplayer and Warzone XP, however, do not advance a player's DMZ level.
Players can earn DMZ XP through looting, combat, Story Missions, Dynamic Operations, Side Ops, and boss encounters.
Importantly, failing to extract does not erase the DMZ XP earned during a deployment.
That does not mean failure is harmless. Equipment and unprotected loot can still be lost, and an eliminated Operator may require recovery.
The distinction means that an unsuccessful deployment can still contribute toward unlocking additional FOB stations, recipes, upgrades, and other progression rewards.
Story Missions, Dynamic Operations, and Free Roam offer different approaches
Before entering Hajin, players choose between three primary deployment options.
Story Missions follow structured objectives connected to DMZ's narrative, offering specific rewards and access to additional content.
Dynamic Operations provide objectives that unfold during a match. Completing them rewards DMZ Cash, XP, and Supply Drops that increase in rarity as more operations are successfully completed.
Free Roam allows players to explore Hajin without committing to a specific mission at deployment.
The best choice depends on the objective of the run.
Players looking to build their inventory may prefer Free Roam, particularly when they need crafting ingredients found in specific locations.
Those targeting progression milestones should pay attention to their current DMZ Orders and available mission rewards.
Infinity Ward's official FOB and progression guide explains these systems and their associated unlock requirements.
Bosses and PvP bounties add another layer of risk
Hajin contains two principal categories of major AI opponents: Lieutenants and Commanders.
Lieutenants are specialized targets that can be tracked through intelligence purchased at the Boss Board or gathered from Lieutenant Hunt towers.
Defeating them offers valuable rewards, but collecting their Dog Tag Case broadcasts the carrier's position, creating an additional reason to extract quickly.
Commanders are larger, heavily defended threats. Examples described in the available material include Colossus, Deathstalker, and a North Korean battle tank.
They offer potentially valuable equipment and crafting ingredients, but attempting these encounters without adequate preparation introduces significant risk.
PvP also operates through a persistent bounty system.
Eliminating rival Operators raises a player's bounty, with four Operator kills triggering Wanted status. Higher bounty levels increase the rewards available to players who successfully hunt down the target.
Consequently, aggressive PvP can make subsequent movement and extraction significantly more complicated.
What should players prioritize in their first DMZ deployments?
The systems above suggest a practical early-game approach.
Start by checking the DMZ Orders available at the FOB and equipping only the gear needed for the intended objective.
For initial resource collection, prioritize accessible loot locations rather than immediately entering highly fortified areas.
Gather basic crafting resources and useful ingredients, complete manageable objectives, and extract before escalating threats make the return journey unnecessarily dangerous.
Once the 3D Printer unlocks, focus on equipment that improves subsequent deployments, especially backpacks, medical supplies, and protective gear.
As the FOB develops, players can expand into weapon customization, specialized Operators, tougher missions, and boss encounters.
Modern Warfare 4's DMZ ultimately places considerable weight on decisions made outside combat.
A successful extraction improves the next deployment, while thoughtful use of the FOB turns collected loot into lasting advantages.
For players entering Hajin for the first time, understanding that relationship between risk, extraction, and permanent progression is arguably the most useful preparation of all.
