Modern Warfare 4 launches without Open Matchmaking playlists, leaving players stuck with the Standard system. Here's what that means for multiplayer.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is entering its multiplayer launch without a dedicated Open Matchmaking playlist, removing an option that previously gave players greater control over how their public matches were assembled.
The absence was highlighted on October 22 by CharlieIntel, which reported that every currently available multiplayer playlist uses the Standard matchmaking system introduced during the beta.
That means players looking for a separate playlist with substantially reduced skill-based matchmaking (SBMM) currently have no such option in Modern Warfare 4.
What happened to Open Matchmaking in Modern Warfare 4?
Open Matchmaking became an important part of Call of Duty's multiplayer discussions during Black Ops 7, where dedicated playlists placed considerably less emphasis on player skill when assembling lobbies.
Unlike traditional skill-focused matchmaking, the Open approach is intended to allow a broader range of player abilities within the same matches.
Modern Warfare 4's Standard system takes a different approach.
Activision previously explained that its updated matchmaking technology considers multiple factors, including player skill, connection quality, party composition and overall matchmaking conditions.
The company has promoted improved team balancing, greater match variety, shorter matchmaking times and a better experience for parties containing players with different skill levels.
However, these objectives do not make Standard matchmaking equivalent to Open Matchmaking.
The important difference is player choice. Without a dedicated Open playlist, players cannot deliberately select the lower-skill-weighted matchmaking alternative previously offered in Black Ops 7.
Activision previously promised Open playlists for the beta
The situation is particularly notable because Activision discussed both matchmaking approaches before Modern Warfare 4's release.
In July 2026, the official Call of Duty account confirmed that Open playlists would remain available in Black Ops 7 and that Modern Warfare 4's upcoming beta would also feature Open playlist options.
The announcement gave players reason to expect continued experimentation with different matchmaking systems.
However, there is an important distinction: Activision's original commitment specifically mentioned the Modern Warfare 4 beta, not necessarily the full game's launch.
The absence of Open playlists from the initial multiplayer offering therefore does not automatically mean the publisher has reversed an explicit launch commitment.
It does, however, leave players without an alternative that had been part of the franchise's recent matchmaking experiments.
What does this mean for multiplayer players?
For players who preferred Open Matchmaking, the immediate consequence is straightforward: Modern Warfare 4 currently offers no separate public playlist specifically designed around substantially reduced skill consideration.
This matters particularly to players who value the wider variety of opponents that less restrictive matchmaking can produce.
It may also affect how mixed-skill groups perceive their multiplayer sessions, although Activision has specifically identified improvements for these parties as one of the goals of its Standard system.
Importantly, the absence of Open playlists does not establish exactly how heavily skill influences individual Modern Warfare 4 matches.
The internal weighting of the matchmaking system has not been publicly detailed sufficiently to determine whether every lobby is tightly skill-matched. Nor does the playlist selection alone demonstrate that connection quality or matchmaking times have deteriorated.
Those questions require actual performance evidence rather than assumptions about the system's name.
Could Open Matchmaking return to Modern Warfare 4?
As of October 22, neither Activision nor Infinity Ward has confirmed when, or whether, dedicated Open Matchmaking playlists will become available in Modern Warfare 4's full multiplayer experience.
The current playlist selection establishes what players can access during the initial rollout, but it does not necessarily represent a permanent decision.
Live-service Call of Duty titles regularly receive playlist updates, so the addition of another matchmaking option remains technically possible. There is currently no confirmed timetable for such a change.
For now, the situation leaves Modern Warfare 4 players with a clear limitation: the Standard matchmaking system is their only publicly reported matchmaking option, with no dedicated Open alternative available.
