Modern Warfare 4's 120FPS Mode Has a Major Catch: Your 120Hz Monitor Might Not Be Enough
Modern Warfare 4 reportedly requires both 120Hz and VRR to unlock 120FPS on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, leaving some players unable to enable Performance Mode even with a high-refresh-rate monitor.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 players on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S may need more than a 120Hz monitor to access the game's high-frame-rate performance mode. According to CharlieIntel, the 120FPS option requires a display that supports both a 120Hz refresh rate and Variable Refresh Rate (VRR).
The reported requirement has become particularly relevant following the launch of Modern Warfare 4's DMZ Early Access on October 20, with some console players finding themselves unable to enable the higher-performance setting despite owning a 120Hz display.
The distinction matters: a screen capable of displaying 120 frames per second does not necessarily support VRR, and the two technologies serve different purposes.
Why Modern Warfare 4's 120FPS requirement matters
A 120Hz display can refresh its image up to 120 times per second, allowing games to deliver noticeably smoother motion than at 60Hz.
VRR works differently. It synchronizes the display's refresh rate with the frames produced by the console, helping reduce screen tearing and visible stuttering when performance fluctuates.
Normally, these features are not universally dependent on each other. A game can support 120FPS output without requiring VRR.
However, the reported Modern Warfare 4 restriction means that players with older 120Hz monitors that lack compatible VRR support may be unable to access the game's higher-frame-rate mode, even when their consoles can output a 120Hz signal.
Activision's official PlayStation overview confirms support for 120Hz High Frame Rate and VRR on PS5. It also highlights an unlocked frame rate on PS5 Pro when both VRR and 120Hz are enabled.
That official description does not, however, fully establish which requirements apply to every individual game mode or console configuration.
